Welcome to Roleplaying Game. [Mar. 20th, 2005|10:22 am]
[Tags|, ]
[Current Music |Linkin Park - My December]

I definately want to DM another campaign before I leave for college; the question is what the hell should I run? In addition to the numerous excellent first party settings published by Wizards, I've also got a handful of homebrew settings that I'd love to run, plus I always have ideas for more. Here are (some of) the ones I'm currently considering:

WotC Settings:

  • Dragonlance

  • Forgotten Realms

  • Eberron

2nd-Party Settings:

  • Ravenloft

  • Soverign Stone

Homebrew Settings:

  • Ryson (My first setting; origionally designed for a series of computer games. Has been under development on and off since elementary school.)

  • Sundered Worlds (I ran a game in this setting once; it lasted for a few sessions.)

  • Grand World (Clearly this one needs a real name. I've been working on this one just about continuiously for over a year. I have the most D&D specific material related to this one.)

Other Ideas:

  • Star Trek d20 (I'd have to write most of the rules, but I think the setting has some great potential. I would probably set it in the midst of the Dominion War.)

  • Magic: the Gathering d20 (I'd have to do some serious revisions of all the base classes, but I think it could make for a very interesting game.)

I think of dozens of other possibilities every day...the hardest part is simply picking one and running with it, instead of changing direction every couple of days.

[Current Music |Daft Punk - Robot Rock]

Alright, I still want to learn a new language, and its really hard to decide what I should learn. I'm therefore going to solicit advice from you, my loyal reading audience, to assist me in this endeavour. Here are the main ones I'm considering. If you have any other reccomendations please suggest those as well.

Spanish

  • Very common in California.

  • I've already taken classes in it, so it should be easier to pick up again.

  • One of the top 5 most speaken languages in the world.

French

  • Many friends from school take/have taken French, so I could practice with them. My mother speaks it as well.

  • I'm a Canadian citizen, so it would make sense for me to learn French.

  • French is useful in seduction, right?

Japanese

  • I know some girls taking Japanese, so I coudl practice with them.

  • It would allow me to understand anime and Japanese websites.

  • It would be interesting to study abroad in Japan. Knowing the language might help.

Russian

  • Jim and Caitlin both claim they want to learn Russian. We could all learn together.

  • I already know a few words, like "Duh" and "Vodka".

I
never really thought I'd have to make any choices about where to go to college; I didn't think I stood a chance of getting in to anywhere other than the CSUs, and it'd be as simple as choosing between those. Now that some UCs have accepted me, however, I've got some real choices to make. Hopefully I'll get a chance to go down south and check out Santa Barbara and San Diego.

Christmas Gift List Part II [Dec. 25th, 2004|05:56 pm]
[Tags|, ]

Woo! After another round of wrapping paper carnage, here are the results:

  • The first season of West Wing on DVD. I didn't ask for this, and had no idea it was coming, but I must admit it is pretty cool. Watched four episodes today.

  • A fifty dollar gift certificate to Macy's.

  • A 2005 Wall Calendar featuring images of Mars taken by the rovers.

  • More money from friends and family.

  • A new hub cap to replace the one that mysteriously vanished from The Volv

  • $60 in gift certificates to iTunes, which I had no idea what I would use for until I opened my brand new

  • iPod! Actually, this one isn't technically mine; that's in the mail and will get here sometime next week. However, I do have a loaner pod that I can use until them. Will be especially useful on the cruise.

Christmas rocks! I'd just like to say thank you to everyone who got me something. Happy Holidays!

[Current Music |Daft Punk - One More Time]

Damn, I'm having one of the best weekends ever.

On Friday we went to Randal's house, and for the most part just fooled around all night. Little D&D, little poker, little talking politics. All in all a pretty good time.

Saturday was simply boss. I woke up in the morning and went over to hang out with Caitlin for a few hours. Then she took me out to Noahs and bought me bagels. ^ ^ Afterward she came to watch me play soccer in Dublin.

The game rocked hard. It started off well, and early in the half we took a two point lead. I had an assist on one of them, where I kicked Mustafa a sweet aerial pass from about three quarters up the field, and then in one fluid motion he trapped it and slammed it into the net. They were going with the wind, though, and managed to tie it up before the end of the half. Second half we were on the good end of the field, though, and took back the momentum. Two more goals made it a 4-2 lead, and our first win of the year. Our record became 1-1-2

I dropped Caitlin off after the game, and went home to get ready for the dance. Picked her and Kyle up again around 6:15, and showed up 10 minutes late to Angelica's house, and were still the first ones there. Took some pictures at her house, then went to Hunan Chef Wong's (The 1st one) for dinner. The meal was awesome, we ordered plates upon plates of food, and ate so much that there was only one box of leftovers to split between the 19 of us.

We showed up at the dance, and it took a little while for things to get going, but once they did everything rocked. The High Top Posse (The same guys from Sr. Ball!) was DJing, and they definately rocked the house. Instead of spinning 3 hours of hip-hop all night, they gave us an incredible variety of music. Instead of the usual 3/4s of the music being crap, last night 3/4ths of the music was songs that I really liked. They also got the crowd (More than 1000 people came) REALLY excited, and lead some great group dances. Among the awesomeness that was played:

  • Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody (The DJs declared that this was the best song ever, and lead the crowd in singing the entire thing. The pinnacle moment of the night.)
  • AC/DC - Back in Black
  • Big & Rich - Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy
  • Darude - Sandstorm (Anything related to DDR rocks my world)
  • DJ Casper - Cha Cha Slide (The DJs coordinated the crowd so EVERYONE was doing the dance at the same time, and facing the same way)
  • Nine Inch Nails - Closer (This one got cut off early because the Administration complained)
  • Berlin - Take My Breath Away (Not the shitty Jessica Simpson version! I can't hear this song without thinking about Tom Cruise)
  • And a ton of other random goodness that I can't remember right now.

Needless to say the entire dance rocked hard. In my not so humble opinion, it's the best dance Amador has had in the past four years. The same guys are going to DJ Junior Prom and Senior Ball this year, so I'm definately going to both of those events.

After the dance we had a small poker game at Caitlin's house. Actually, we had two small games. The first, at the insistance of Angelica and Shelby was played not for money, so it quickly degenerated into an All-In fest, and was over nearly as soon as it started. Those players left after the first game, too tired to continue, while the rest of us began a real game. I did pretty well overall, I was the last player eliminated, and got out after Jim and Caitlin went out in two consecutive hands, making Kyle the clear chip leader. He wiped me out soon after on a pretty good hand. I still think I made the right play going all in.

I got home around 2 in the morning, and immediately went to bed, because I knew I had another soccer game to play at 8. I got a solid 5 hours of sleep, made it to the field on time, and it was raining cats and dogs. I was positive the game would be canceled, but the refs showed up and we played. The field was quite muddy, but not so much so that you lost all traction. We were playing Newark, who usually beat us every year, and the game was really close. We eeked by a 3-2 victory, though. The sweetest moment of the game was when Alan did a jumping header to knock the ball right into the net. We're now 2-1-2.

All in all everything rocks. Every weekend should be this cool.

University [Sep. 15th, 2004|08:44 pm]

Alright, I know I shouldn't get my hopes up because I have a hellish GPA, but I'm getting more and more confident that I'll be able to get into an A-list university.

Resume/College App Items:
3 months as an engineering intern
15 months as an IT intern
2-year member and president of the Robotics Club
4-year member and 2-year secretary of the GSA
Volunteered for Canary Fund
Competition Civics team member

"In"s at specific schools:

  • Cornell: The robotics faculty advisor offered to speak to admissions on my behalf
  • MIT: I'm going to get ahold of the MIT robotics guy, maybe I can work out something like the Cornell situation
  • Berkeley: This isn't really an In, but they're really into the sexuality thing over tehre, so I think the 4-year GSA member will look good.
  • Stanford: My dad works with their cancer research center, and the charity I volunteer for has donated millions of dollars there

[Current Mood | tired]

If I had to describe my first week of school with one word it would have to be exhausting. Admittedly, this is mostly my fault for leaving most of my summer work and my community service to the very last minute, affording me very little sleep all week.

Anyways, even though this weekend is giving me a chance to get calmed down and relaxed, this school year is going to be my busiest ever. In addition to regular homework, which isn't actually too bad except for Calculus, I've got a pretty large number of on-going commitments.

  • Competition Civics - Well, in addition to being a class we're supposto spend a good amount of time outside of school meeting for Comp Civics. This doesn't even include the competitions.

  • Robotics Club - Club President this year. We're doing a complete rewrite of the command code, designing a whole new submarine, and upgrading the old sub.

  • GSA - Club Secretary this year, shouldn't be too time consuming.

  • Canary Fund - This is where I did my community service, and I've decided I want to continue to volunteer here when they need me.

  • Asian Med Net - To be honest, I'm not even really sure what my role in this project is supposto be, but Damian is really excited about it and getting me involved, and I'm pretty sure I'll be able to help out in a number of unforseen ways.

  • College Applications - Can't forget about this one...

  • Magic - Crap. Jim showed me his new Future Sight deck tonight. I even played a game. I don't think I'm re-addicted, but if Future Sight is viable I won't really have a reason not to start playing again.

I'm sure there is more but I really need to get some sleep. I plan on sleeping until noon or oneish, then heading over to Randal's for movie day. We're watching Barton Fink, Blade Runner, and Requiem for a Dream.

Been talking with Jeff for a few hours, and it made me think of the book Microserfs by Douglas Coupland. Anyways, I decided that if I were a contestant on Jeopardy, my seven dream categories would be:

- Movies with Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson
- Dungeons and Dragons 3rd Edition
- Lego
- Super Metroid
- Star Trek
- The Most Extreme Elimination Challenge
- Cartoon Network

Gahh...still not sleeping...still not tired...haven't done any history since the last update either.

Got fed up with Trent, BTW, and am now listening to some techno.
