Ballroom Dance [Feb. 12th, 2006|11:25 am]

[Current Music |Daft Punk - Face to Face]

Alright I've (basically) finalized my schedule for next quarter. My pass time starts Monday morning so chances are none of the classes I want to take will fill up before then.

I also added up all the courses I need to take before graduating to meet the requirements for my major and general education. I need 116 units worth of classes, and I have 10 quarters left at UCSB, so that averages out to 11.6 units per quarter. An "average" courseload is supposed to be 15 or 16 units. So I really don't need to feel bad about only taking 12.5 units Spring quarter.

  • Physics 2: Basic Physics

  • Computer Science 60: Introduction to C, C++, and UNIX

  • Mathematics 5B: Vector Calculus

  • Exercise and Sports Studies 1-16A: Elementary Ballroom Dance

So the anomaly in this schedule is, of course, Ballroom Dance. It is only worth half of a unit, and it doesn't meet a single major or general education requirement. It will, however, teach me how to dance. Hopefully. Which will be good, because it will mean I won't have to say no when people want to take me to cool dances. Emi is also enrolling in the class, so I'll have chances to practice outside of class as well. If the class is enjoyable I might even take Intermediate and Advanced Ballroom in subsequent quarters. We'll see.

Now, in order to fit this dance class in my schedule I did have to make a major sacrifice: every tuesday and thursday I have my physics lecture at 8 in the morning. Now, to be fair, I will very rarely actually attend said lecture, but it will be a pain getting out of bed to take the midterm.

So overall my schedule is quite light. This is good because it should allow me more free time, and also more time to work. I've been working much less this quarter because of my current schedule, so it'll be nice to get back in there and make more money again.

[Current Music |Daft Punk - One More Time]

Damn, I'm having one of the best weekends ever.

On Friday we went to Randal's house, and for the most part just fooled around all night. Little D&D, little poker, little talking politics. All in all a pretty good time.

Saturday was simply boss. I woke up in the morning and went over to hang out with Caitlin for a few hours. Then she took me out to Noahs and bought me bagels. ^ ^ Afterward she came to watch me play soccer in Dublin.

The game rocked hard. It started off well, and early in the half we took a two point lead. I had an assist on one of them, where I kicked Mustafa a sweet aerial pass from about three quarters up the field, and then in one fluid motion he trapped it and slammed it into the net. They were going with the wind, though, and managed to tie it up before the end of the half. Second half we were on the good end of the field, though, and took back the momentum. Two more goals made it a 4-2 lead, and our first win of the year. Our record became 1-1-2

I dropped Caitlin off after the game, and went home to get ready for the dance. Picked her and Kyle up again around 6:15, and showed up 10 minutes late to Angelica's house, and were still the first ones there. Took some pictures at her house, then went to Hunan Chef Wong's (The 1st one) for dinner. The meal was awesome, we ordered plates upon plates of food, and ate so much that there was only one box of leftovers to split between the 19 of us.

We showed up at the dance, and it took a little while for things to get going, but once they did everything rocked. The High Top Posse (The same guys from Sr. Ball!) was DJing, and they definately rocked the house. Instead of spinning 3 hours of hip-hop all night, they gave us an incredible variety of music. Instead of the usual 3/4s of the music being crap, last night 3/4ths of the music was songs that I really liked. They also got the crowd (More than 1000 people came) REALLY excited, and lead some great group dances. Among the awesomeness that was played:

  • Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody (The DJs declared that this was the best song ever, and lead the crowd in singing the entire thing. The pinnacle moment of the night.)
  • AC/DC - Back in Black
  • Big & Rich - Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy
  • Darude - Sandstorm (Anything related to DDR rocks my world)
  • DJ Casper - Cha Cha Slide (The DJs coordinated the crowd so EVERYONE was doing the dance at the same time, and facing the same way)
  • Nine Inch Nails - Closer (This one got cut off early because the Administration complained)
  • Berlin - Take My Breath Away (Not the shitty Jessica Simpson version! I can't hear this song without thinking about Tom Cruise)
  • And a ton of other random goodness that I can't remember right now.

Needless to say the entire dance rocked hard. In my not so humble opinion, it's the best dance Amador has had in the past four years. The same guys are going to DJ Junior Prom and Senior Ball this year, so I'm definately going to both of those events.

After the dance we had a small poker game at Caitlin's house. Actually, we had two small games. The first, at the insistance of Angelica and Shelby was played not for money, so it quickly degenerated into an All-In fest, and was over nearly as soon as it started. Those players left after the first game, too tired to continue, while the rest of us began a real game. I did pretty well overall, I was the last player eliminated, and got out after Jim and Caitlin went out in two consecutive hands, making Kyle the clear chip leader. He wiped me out soon after on a pretty good hand. I still think I made the right play going all in.

I got home around 2 in the morning, and immediately went to bed, because I knew I had another soccer game to play at 8. I got a solid 5 hours of sleep, made it to the field on time, and it was raining cats and dogs. I was positive the game would be canceled, but the refs showed up and we played. The field was quite muddy, but not so much so that you lost all traction. We were playing Newark, who usually beat us every year, and the game was really close. We eeked by a 3-2 victory, though. The sweetest moment of the game was when Alan did a jumping header to knock the ball right into the net. We're now 2-1-2.

All in all everything rocks. Every weekend should be this cool.

[Current Music |Scooter - I'm Raving]

Alright! We had our first soccer game of the season today, and we did really well. With a grand total of 12 of us showing up (You need 7 men to play, and can field up to 11), we had one substitute. The Livermore Sharks had 17 players, so every time they called a substitution they were exchanging more than half their players.

Overall our teams were pretty evenly matched. The first ten minutes of the game saw a lot of back and forth play, with no one clearly dominating the game. Then we scored our first goal, and for the rest of the half exchanged goals with the other team. When the halftime whistle blew it was 2-2.

Second half I was put in as keep. Luckily for me (and the team!) our forwards took control of the second half. The ball spent a majority of the time on the other side of the field, meaning fewer shots on me. When the ball did come back, the defense usually came through. I ended up making about a dozen saves that half, and a few of them were pretty good. The second half was a shut-out, so we tied 2-2.

Considering that I came to the game expecting to get whumped, and that we were down many men, I was really pleased with the teams performance. I also suprised myself in goal; although without the great support I had from the fielders I wouldn't have done nearly as well.

After the game I met up with a bunch of the band kids at Cold Stone for ice cream. Good times all around. Then came home, showered, and chillaxed at Randal's for about two hours. I'm back now, and icing my leg. Goign to go to bed soon; have a whole week of school to recover from, and have Homecoming tomorrow night.

Weekend Update [Sep. 21st, 2004|10:59 pm]

[Current Music |Muse - Butterflies and Hurricanes]

Well, a lotta stuff has been going on lately. When I have any free time I usually gobble up all the sleep I can, which is non-conducive for updating livejournals.

Oh, just as an interjection, I'd like to clairify what I mean when I say "free time". Neither hanging out, nor partying, nor going to dances count as free time in my book. They are certainly enjoyable, but I view these fun experiences as necessary for my existance, and thus there isn't really a possibility of re-allocating their time toward other pursuits like homework, blogging, or sleeping.

Homework is crazy this year. I'd estimate that the nightly homework assigned to me (counting reccomended reading, studying, etc) is two to four times as intense as it was last year. That wouldn't be very significant, except for the fact that I'm actually trying really hard (and doing really well) in school this year. To be honest, I'm not even sure exactly why I'm doing this; it's already too late to raise my GPA for purposes of college acceptance. I just feel like doing well this year.

I'm actually succeding, too. I currently have high As in all of my classes save Calculus and English Literature. I've got a solid B in Calc, which I'm planning on raising to an A by the end of the semester. Lit is by far the hardest class I've ever been enrolled in, and it doesn't help that I'm only an average writer. I know it's not just me, though. He announced to the class last Friday that everyone in the class had a C or lower as a current grade. This mostly stems from the fact that he tore our first essays to shreds. His class is going to be sort of a literary boot-camp: he's breaking us all down to the lowest common denominator, and then going to rebuild up our writing skills from scratch. (Just as an aside, I realize that I have no grasp whatsoever of when to use a semicolon and when to use a full colon. I'm working on that.) I hope for a B or a C at the semester.

Monday was Senior Picnic, and I had a blast. I spent some time with the usual suspects, but the highlight of the day was definately hanging out with Jessie, who I hadn't seen in over a year. We ended up spending most of the day together, there was lots of fun water-sliding action. Aside from the waterslides, there was some pretty good food served, and I played beach volleyball for an hour or so. I wasn't the best player around, but I definately wasn't the worst, so I felt pretty good, and had a lot of fun.

Today was pretty cool, too. On my way to soccer practice I called Jessie, and we talked for a while. I told her I wanted to chill with her and Elaine this weekend, but their homecoming is on Saturday, and she had commited to her friends to going. Anyways, long story short, I'm going to Foothill's homecoming. This actually might be kind of a problem, because I commited my family to going to the Earthquakes game on Friday, and sit by my soccer team as opposed to my brother's. They aren't going to be happy when I bail. Oh well.

I'm not exactly feeling like showing off my womanly side by talking about the season premier of Gilmore Girls right now, so I'm off to do my Calculus homework.

Awesomness [May. 16th, 2004|12:42 pm]

[Current Music |Explosions in the Sky - Snow and Lights]

Prom kicked ass.

Actually, my whole weekend has kicked ass.

For starters, my weekend started Thursday night rather than Friday night. I didn't realize it until right before practice on Thursday, but I didn't have to go to school on Friday. Great America field trip instead. "Physics Day". Heh. I'm not even taking physics.

Anyway, Great America was awesome. Even though the park was really full with all the kids from different schools doing physics day, we still had a total blast. It was an awesome field trip because we basically had total freedom; there were no teachers or chaperones wandering around behind us all day. Went on a couple of coasters, and a couple of water rides. Allie even took off her shirt on Rip Roaring Rapids ;)

After we got back from PGA, Vijay and I went to the mall to pick up our Tuxes. Took about an hour, but everything was satisfactory. I went home, showered, then headed over to the bowling alley to meet up with Elaine and her friends. Brought Caitlin with me, and Shelby was around too. We ended up getting coffee and Burger King because the wait to bowl was so long. Didn't mind, though, still was lots of fun. Friday Fun doesn't end there, though. At around 11 Caitlin and I chilled at her house for an hour, and then headed over to Randal's house, where we played d20 Modern until about 3 in the morning. We all crashed at his house, except for Jim and TJ, who drove home around then.

Caitlin woke me up around 9 by sneezing really loudly; no one else was up yet. We went to hang out at Meadows Park for about an hour, and then headed over to IHOP for breakfast. After breakfast we parted ways and went home to get ready for prom. I actually then fell asleep again until about 1:30. Then I went on some promesque errands, like getting car washed and picking up corsage. Putting the tux on was harder than expected, and I had to call my dad to ask him how to use the cufflinks, but I ended up being only half an hour late to pick up Caitlin.

When I finally got her, we headed over to San Ramon, where Jason's dad took some awesome pictures of all of us, free of charge. I don't have any pics yet, but I think we're going to all get a CD with them at some point. We then headed over to Bishop Ranch, and Caitlin and I took a walk through the park for half an hour or so until the building itself opened. We went inside, and the Prom rocked. Definately can't start to describe all the coolness that went on, so I'll just mention two of the coolest parts of the prom.

Firstly, they gave us each a tin of rectangular mints, presumably to freshen us up after dinner. However, as our party soon discovered, they were much more useful as building materials. Some great Domino courses were set up, all of which got demolished shortly thereafter. I built a tower 50 mints high. The best parts were the drawings, however. In addition to mint pictures of people and animals, we also used mints to specify the value of pi to 50 digits.

Secondly, they played the Tunuck Tunuck Tun song. If you're not familiar with it, it's one of those random songs that gains a cultish following, like the All Your Base song and the Maccarana. Anyways, it rocked because we had lots of wacky dancing, and great fun for all.

Caitlin and I ended up leaving a little early to have some private time, and then we met up with the rest of the group for some midnight bowling. I'd never done that before, but it was probably the highlight of the night. The building was dark, except for some disco lights lighting up the lanes. I bowled my best game ever, with a score of 167. Not counting the bonus roll in the 10th frame, I only missed 3 pins all game. It rocked. We bowled until it closed at around 1:30 or 2, then Caitlin and I went back to IHOP for some dinner.

We saw Jason at IHOP, along with Shannon and Chelsea, and a few other peeps. They were just leaving though, so we didn't get to sit with them. We also saw some of the girls who were at the alley there, and said hi. When we were done eating we went and parked and cuddled for about another hour, before I finally took Caitlin home at about 3, and got home and went to bed myself at about 3:30.

Like I said, it was the best weekend ever. And it's still Sunday!
