Blonde Moment of the Day: I couldn't hear any sound from my computer, so I reinstalled all my audio drivers. Then I turned on the speakers.

Aside: I don't like how some websites use tags seperated by commas, and other sites seperate with spaces. Since I've started using Flickr I've had to go back and manually edit all my new LJ posts to insert commas between tags.

[Current Mood |working]

So I'm working on cleaning out my room. I just put all (except for about 30 or so) of my books into boxes, and later today I'm going to take them to a used bookstore and see how much I can get. I'm also throwing away tons of computer cables and old junk that no one would even use any more. I kept all my Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman books, as well as some Neil Stephenson and Douglas Coupland books. I'm also going to be keeping my Star Trek and West Wing DVDs, and my collection of assorted notes and gifts that I've recieved from people over the years. That should fill up about three boxes, which I can keep in the garage here. I'm also going to leave my suit, most my ties, and some other assorted crap like that. And of course I'm going to leave a server up and running in the garage, to synch my files with and act as a backup server.

All I'm bringing to Santa Barbara, aside from clothes and linens and such, are Zolton and Sylvia, my two faithful computers. I'll probably also bring a couple of boxes of Green Tea.

Everything else is getting thrown out. I have until Friday morning to vacate my bedroom.

[Current Music |Nine Inch Nails - Somewhat Damaged]

I just spoke with my father on the phone; he was having lots of trouble with one of the family computers at his house and he called me for help. It wasn’t something I could solve over the phone however. He was really frustrated because he had spent hours attempting to solve this issue, and he got really mad when I couldn’t help. So now I’m in a cranky mood as a result.

The rest of this week has been so much more awesome, though. I spent the last three days in Santa Barbara at orientation. In addition to participating in that fun program I also got to spend a fair deal of time with Allie, who is currently vacationing there with her family.

I really do want to spend as much time with Allie as possible while I still can. As soon as college starts I’m going to be lucky if I get to see her once every month or two, so I don’t think it’s so ridiculous that I want to spend so much time with her now.

As an aside, I’ve really come to realize that a huge portion of Desktop Support and IT stems not from extensive education or study, but is actually an acquired talent. If it was simply a question of knowledge I would be able to troubleshoot any problem over the telephone simply by conveying the appropriate instructions to first diagnose and then solve the problem. As it is, however, unless it is something very simple I usually can’t even think of what to try unless I’m sitting at the terminal reading the error message myself. Somehow when I am operating the machine it is different, and I can solve issues that are far more intricate and twisted than I otherwise could.

This is why instead of going back to Pleasanton tonight I am going to get dropped off in Saratoga so I can fix all those fucking problems with the computers. I don’t actually even have my OS CDs with me, but I’ll see what I can do without them. I can probably bittorrent every image I need overnight, and then burn them when I wake up in the morning.

Aside #2: As I’m writing this on my new laptop in the car on the way back from Santa Barbara, and I keep stopping my writing to chat with my mother and answer the phone, I’m actually listening to the entire album (Fragile) as I write this entry. It’s definitely one of my top five favorite albums of all time, and may even be number one. I can’t decide whether or not Discovery belongs on that list. It’s also another contender for the coveted #1 spot, but for some reason I don’t feel like it really is the best album ever. Maybe it’s just cause I’m in more of a NINy mode right now.

Anyways, as I was saying, Santa Barbara was awesome. It’s a beautiful campus, especially when looking out over the water. In fact, I think the two best moments of the entire weekend were when Allie and I were constructing sand structures on the beach, and when we spotted two dolphins gracefully swimming west along the shore.

Other highlights include discovering that earning my Bachelor’s is going to require even fewer classes than I previously thought, meeting some really fun and interesting people, and having a late night powwow on the beach.

Aside #3: Just because I’m curious to know: do you, my readership, enjoy reading my longer, more detailed but multi-subjected entries? Or do you prefer when I write shorter, more focused entries about a single topic? Chances are I’m not going to change anything as a result of this survey, but I am interested in knowing the answer.

[Current Music |Moby - Find My Baby]

Junior Prom was really, really awesome.

I got to Brianna's house at seven, and met everybody, except for my date. Apparently she was running late because she had lost her car in the mall parking lot. It was later discovered to have been hidden between two SUVs. Kendell showed up about 15 minutes later, in a beautiful green dress. She was acompanied by her niece and nephew, who are about three years old, dressed in formal wear. They were very cute, and took pictures with us.

After we finished with the bazillions of pictures we were finally off to Prom. We only got lost twice on the way there. We arrived, ate, took more pictures, then went off to dance. Even though I'm a crappy dancer, I still had a lot of fun on the floor. My only regret was not being able to dance with Allie, even though the reason we decided to go to Junior Prom was so that we could make up some dances we'd missed last year.

After the dance ended we drove back to Brianna's, making a quick stop at Kendell's so she could pick up her bikini, and a stop at Allie's so I could pick up my swimsuit. We chilled in the hot tub for a little while, then got out and just chilled in her kitchen. At one point we had a massage train going with at least five or six people going on.

Kendell and I left Brianna's around three, and I dropped her off at home. I then came home and watched an episode of West Wing from the fourth season. It focused entirely on C.J.'s relationship with her father, and had no political dealings until the very end, which was dissipointing. It did set up for the next episode, though, which I hope will be better.

I ended up sleeping from about five until ten, netting five hours of sleep. When I woke up this morning I reformatted Zolton, giving him a fresh install of Windows XP. I'm now in the process of reinstalling all important software and such. Aside from a fair amount of chores I did today, I spent the rest of my time studying for Calculus, and reading about old NASA programs. This was triggered by an awesome article that I saw on Slashdot about the successful failure of Apollo 13.

After reading that I got to thinking about the massive amounts of engineering and preparation needed for such an undertaking, and find it miraculus that Kennedy was able to inspire the nation to complete it in less than a decade. Although I disagree with President Bush on many matters, I think one of the most important moments of his presidency was his speech on January 15, 2004 at NASA headquarters. Although clearly not as ambitious as Kennedy's famous proclimation, I feel that Bush is forcing NASA to re-focus its mission on the manned exploration of our solar system. By returning to the Moon before 2020 in what will clearly be a far more technologically advanced and robust solution than the Apollo program provided we will be developing the technologies necessary to send manned missions to Mars and beyond.

NASA currently recieves approximately 1% of the national budget each year, which is either too much or too little, depending on who you ask. Admittingly, that money could go a long way to improving education or reducing poverty, but I'd argue that in the long term space exploration is so integral to the future of our species that the short term losses are definately worth it.

I've started to think about getting involved in space engineering. The Apollo 13 article affected me in a way that few things do; in the same way as Microserfs, the West Wing and Competition Civics have. It made me want to pursue spaceflight as a career. Now admittingly my interests vary as frequently as the wind, but I've realized that a career in spaceflight has a massive overlap with both the major interest area of my life (computer science) but also with my big interest of the yaer (political science). Although it has remained primarily focused on science, NASA has become a much more political body than it was 40 years ago. I can only wonder if there is a way that I could work both as an engineer on space projects as well as a lobbiest for NASA, or something similar to that. Even if there isn't, it's still fun to think about.

Anyways, I should get to bed soon, or study or something. My four-day Calculus final begins in just under eight hours.

[Current Mood |awake]
[Current Music |Third Eye Blind - The Red Summer Sun]

Well, I'm starting to get back into my "normal" sleep schedule, where I'll sleep for anywhere from 2 to 6 hours twice each day. I got thrown off some time after Winter Break, now I'm getting back on track.

I actually feel more vitalized when I'm on a schedule like this, and I feel like I become a more productive individual. Since I'm sleeping twice a day, I never go for a really long stretch without getting any sleep, so I rarely feel sleep deprived.

In other news, I'm so ready for college. Since there is an overwhelming probability that I will be attending Santa Barbara next year, I think I'm probably going to learn how to surf. I'm also looking into potential job opportunities down there, although I doubt if I'll be able to find any before I actually move in.

Jim and I are talking again about setting out on a business venture. If we actually end up doing so it will probably be something I can do from Santa Barbara, so that might end up being my source of income. Of course, chances are this won't get past the conceptual stage anyways, so it's not really significant.

Our "secret" powderpuff cheerleading practices are supposto start on Wednsday, which is something I'm pretty excited about. There shold be at least four of us attending these early practices, and our numbers should increase significantly once the official ones begin. I want to talk to Andy soon, so he can start choreographing our routine.

I've also become a lot more involved with Wikipedia lately. I initially started writing in order to provide another avenue for people to learn about the San Jose Grand Prix, but I've been getting involved in other aspects as well, including copyediting and fighting vandalism.

I also ran a single session of a campaign set in one of my homebrew settings ("Grand World" or "Tilliskan" depending on what I feel like calling it at the time). I did it with the nighttime group, and I think it went over well enough. I'm currently working on writing a session summary and building an experience spreadsheet. I really want to continue this campaign for at least a few more sessions. The group is primarily an experiment, so I can start fleshing out the feel of the world, but I would love to run it on an ongoing basis if there is enough interest. Especially since I declared a delay for the after school game, which is to be set in the same world. We won't begin that one until after AP testing is over, because most of my players are studious little children, and will be spending most of their free time preparing themselves for those two weeks.

Zolton's performance has been degrading more and more noticably over the last month...I now see it's definately necessary to reinstall Windows, and the sooner the better. I've also ressurected Fernando, who is now running WindowsXP and is quite stable. I plan on using him for the few hours/days that it will take to rebuild Zolton, depending on how thourough I end up being.

I am also starting to look around for a server to use in order to setup my subversion home directory for when I go to college. The plan is to leave a computer here, in Pleasanton, with a whole lot of hard disk space, running subversion. All my files will be kept in a repository on this server. When at school in Santa Barbara, or when I'm anywhere else for that matter I will be able to connect with any computer, download what files I need, work on them, and upload them. I will never lose any data due to the revision control features of subversion. On my main workstations (which I anticipate being Zolton and the soon-to-be-acquired new laptop) I will always have a version of the repository stored, so updating will be a matter of a simple binary difference, and will require very little bandwidth. Now its just a matter of finding a suitable machine, outfitting it with large reliable hard disks and installing a stable linux system on top. And of course organizing my files into a sufficient configuration to be uploaded. That will be the least fun part.

I'm also finally getting to work on Ken's computer, which I promised I would do for him in December. I actually really screwed up, not only in taking so long to start fixing it, but I think during the move I also threw away one of the side panels for the machine, so I might have to give it back to him with its guts exposed. Good thing I'm getting out of this town soon; can avoid most of the bad word-of-mouth this will get me.

I've actually been making some interesting and beneficial business deals lately, and am currently a lot less broke than I was a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully my prosperity will continue into the future, so I will be able to afford things like prom tickets, tux rentals, and, most importantly of all, food.

[Current Music |Stardust - Music Sounds Better With You]

Daft Punk has a new album coming out later this month. I just found out, but I'm sure its going to be awesome. Also, Halo 19 is due to be released in May, which is also eagerly anticipated by yours truly.

Speaking of music, I'm currently involved in a love-hate relationship with iTunes. It's organizational facility is wonderful, but ever since I upgraded my machine to SP2 it has responded very poorly; music actually skips when I play it off my hard drive. Granted this happens under WinAmp now too, so I'm sure it's a windows problem; I just wish I knew what. iTunes is also keeping me from abandoning Windows entirely. If I could run it natively under Linux I'd have no reason to keep RedmondOS on my computer.

I'm thinking about asking for a Mac laptop for graduation. I still haven't decided for sure; I'm really kind of looking for a good reason why not to. I could certainly get a more powerful x86 laptop for the same cost, but OSX is just so damn sexy. It's a true conundrum. Luckily I've got a few months to decide yet.

I'm also just going to throw in another shameless plug for DoopTrivia because I think its really cool, and more people should check it out. Props to Val for adding it to her friends list.

I also keep making mental notes to check out overstock.com, but I never get around to it. I suppose I could go now, but that would defeat the purpose of me writing it here. Perhaps someday I'll look back upon this and check it out.

I'm going to have to go back through my entries to see if I've ever posted Music Sounds Better With You as by Daft Punk before, and correct it. Oh well.

This entry is boring, and over.

Well, due to “potential weather issues” over Las Vegas we get to sit around in OAK for two extra hours before our plane can depart. Lucikly for me, last night I decided to ressurect Fernando, to facilitate the writing of college essays during my short vacation. Of course, instead I have been using him to work on D&D material instead.

Fernando is now running Fedora Core 3, and although I haven't used it much at all so far it is a pretty good OS. The only problem I've encountered so far is a strange bug where OpenOffice causes my entire system to become unstable when I right-click a mispelt word for suggestions. I suspect it's trying to load some sort of massive dictionary into memory or something, but I'm not really sure. Since I don't have “the internets” right now I'll have to wait till I get home to check for bug reports and updates.

I don't really have much to write; I'm just lying here on the floor of the terminal.

[Current Music |A Perfect Circle - The Nurse Who Loved Me]

Woke up at about 5:30 today. I'm not really sure why.

I did some re-organizing of my room. Well, I moved two monitors onto a desk, put Zolton behind the desk, setup my speakers and woofer and brought a chair into my room. For the first time in over a year my primary workstation is setup at a desk. Hopefully this will be a lot better for my back.

I found out yesterday that Mr. Ladd is going to be the new Comp Civics teacher. I have mixed feelings about this; I know he's the best man for the job, but it also means I'm going to have to work a lot harder and will be able to get away with a lot less.

Right now I'm doing a filesystem cleanup and reorganization. I want to install Windows XP on Zolton, but I think I left my XP Pro CD in Saratoga. I took a break from the cleaning when I found 24 Love Hina episodes, and watched one of them. It's a fairly low-res rip, but that's okay. It's in Japanese, with English subtitles. Reminded me that I want to learn Japanese (along with all the other languages I want to...).

Have a ton of work left to do on the sub. We leave at 4 in the morning on Wednsday.

Well, Caitlin recently started running Folding@Home in addition to SETI@home. My ego will most certainly not someone I know to have more workunits than me, so I installed the folding client on a medium-speed machine and am now slowly cranking out units for a second folding project.

I also setup an instance of DoopGroup for folding, to complement the one for SETI. The Folding group is looking pretty sad right now, and while the SETI group has an impressive workunit total, it doesn't exactly have a spectacular member count, either.

If anyone reading this runs a distributed computing program, or is interested in doing so, you're certainly invited to join one or both of my DoopGroups!

[Current Music |Nobuo Uematsu - Mods de Chocobo]

Well, over the last few months I've been getting more and more into Bit Torrent downloads. At first I just snagged a few linux ISOs, I wanted to do my part to ensure other users would have the fastest downloads possible. Then I started branching out, snagging games, music, and movies. Now It's gotten to the point where I have massive amounts of data downloading at all times. I feel that somehow if I'm not using the entirety of my broadband pipe that it's going to waste.

I still have about 100GB of storage left on Zolton, so I'm not in danger of running out of space yet. If I start getting close I'll probably offload the data I'll never use to CDs, to make room for more.

It's not just downloading, though. Today I started ripping the few audio CDs I have into mp3s, so that I can actually just throw out the CDs and get rid of the physical junk.

I've actually been trying (very half-assedly, of course) to eliminate as much physical junk from my life as possible. I've been gradually digitializing years of accumulated data, but now I'm stepping up the opperation. My goal is to have my room paper-free by the start of summer. I know that seems quite unrealistic, especially considering the quantity of dead trees currently occupying my room, but I'm going to try to make it happen.

I also made a backup of my core personal files today. Approximately 200 MBs of data, it's basically a lifetime of saved up important (and some unimportant) communications. It also includes pictures of my friends, and a lot of software I have written. I haven't done a proper backup in months, if not years, so it was definately important to get it done.

Semi-related to my current crusade against paper is another very important event in my life: last night I successfully installed linux on my laptop. Although it doens't sound like such an important claim, especially considering I've done dozens of linux installations before, this marks the first time I have successfully had X running on a laptop. This is also the first time I've done a permenant desktop installation of Linux. I plan on using the laptop as much as possible rather than using the Windows computers. I've been dabbling in Linux for years now; it's time I finally took the plunge.

[Current Music |The Cynic Project - Trance Generation]

Alright, today was pretty fun. This morning I woke up around nine, and I started doing some major fooling around with hardware. I grabbed my assorted junk machines from all over the house, and assembled them in the garage. Until it was all in one place I had no idea how much there really was. Not counting the 7 running computer in the house, I had 9 machines in various states of repair, and various states of obsoleteness. After assessing the assembled array, I decided that using all the parts I could probably build 3, maybe 4 usable machines, and trash the rest of them. That will free up a few cubic meters, which woud definately be welcome in my house.

Today I made two of the machines, and tommorow I'll probably save parts for the other 2, and establish a giant heap of compu-trash. One of them is almost done installing Debian, and I am going to put Mandrake on the other as soon as I post this entry and get somethign to eat.

Anyways, after working on the machines, I went over to help Caitlin out with her Japanese skit. I was kinda a grouch, because I wanted to be working on the machines, but things got more fun when I was permitted to rig a hairspray flamethrower to burn our model house. That was fun.

I then played Super Mario World for about an hour while Caitlin took a nap, then we headed over to see Grease. It was pretty good as far as high school productions go, but it didn't hold a torch up to how amazing How to Succede in Business Without Really Trying was last year. In fact, the lead singer from last year had a small (one song) part in the musical this year, and he stole the entire show. He's an awesome actor, and singer. If I remember I'll get the program from Caitlin, and post his name up here.

The best part of the day though was the after party at Tyler's house. He had a roll as a minor character (Eugene), although he was definately the most major of the minors. He also had really loud fan support, which was pretty cool. Anyways, his party was mostly DDR at the start, and then we lounged around and talked after people began to get tired. It broke up around midnight or 12:30, because most of our friends still can't legally drive after midnight, and most of their parents enforce that rule too. Even though I don't always uphold it, I still can't wait until March when I won't have to be paranoid everytime I drive past twelve.

And now here I am, back in my room. Hungry, and anxious to try out Mandrake 10. Mostly just hungry.

Well, some of you have wanted to know where I do most of my work. Here's a peek.

Notable features in this picture include:
1] The sub computer is on the white board spanning the gap between the chair and the top computer. The components you see are (from left to right) the CPU stack, the hard disk on top of the CD drive, and the power supply. There is another CD drive, but its dead. You can see the wire connecting from the stack to the monitor on the TV tray. It is running Debian GNU/Linux.
2] Zolton, the computer under the board, is my primary workstation. It is connected to the large monitor on the floor. Currently runs Windows 2000.
3] Fernando, my faithful laptop, is right below Zolton's monitor in the picture. Also runs Windows 2000.
4] The computer in the bottom right hand corner is Opus III. He's not really complete right now, but today I'm going to try to finish him up, and install Mandrake Linux 10.

In Biology right now; we're doing a lab related to the pull of water through a plant's xylem. Very exciting. Last night I got an AP Bio study guide thingy from the bookstore. I also took a nap there; the 4th nap in as many visits. The chairs are very comfortable.

I checked the sub computer this morning, it's still running perfectly. Apparently I am a little better at installing linux than I thought.

For the picnic today I brought cookies, the guacamole, and two huge blankets. I put the guac in Mr. Ladd's fridge, and he made fun of m for taking both AP Comp Civics and AP Gov even though I have a C in AP USH.

I just want to go home and play with the sub.

[Current Music |Nine Inch Nails - The Frail]

Today was an awesome hacking day.

First, in CompSci, I have the network chat program working wonderfully. The packet broadcast works perfectly, now the only improvements left to make are GUI niceities, and formalizing a packet structure for the communications. I'm already dreaming about ways to make it PGP/GPG compatible and such, but I have to force myself to stay within the original specifications so my other projects don't suffer because of it.

After school we had a Robotics meeting, and Kevin brought the sub computer. I kind of ignored the rest of the meeting as I worked with the computer, figuring out the BIOS and the special interfaces. I had to leave early to give Brett a ride home, but I took the computer so I could look at it later.

Dinner with dad was pretty uneventful; when I came home I made the guacamole for the picnic tommorow. I'm also going to bring chocolate chip cookies, and blankets. Maybe something else too, if I think of anything.

Right now I'm working on the sub again, looking through some interesting documentation for this BIOS. I need to go look up "El Torito" booting, which apparently is some sort of standard for booting embedded systems from a CD drive. I was expecting the sub to have a standardish PC BIOS, but it appears as though it's actually a BIOS geared toward embedded systems. This means it will take me a little bit of time to get used to, but I suspect that it will be advantageous in the long run.
